Eat, Drink and be Merry ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tis the season to eat, drink, and be merry, it's no time to fret of calories, fat grams, and carbs. It dawned on me the other day how obsessed this culture is with food, we like it but hate it all at the same time. The average person spends at least an hour or more each day thinking negatively about food which would explain why so many people suffer from eating disorders today than ever before in recorded history. I realize it's hard for many in this society to view eating as a form of celebrating life but millenia ago this was our foreparents attitude. The enjoyment of meals, all meals, were a part of celebrating life. Special attention was paid to life's events such as childbirth, marriage, death, change of life for women, and so on. Even though we still celebrate much of the same events as our ancesters, today there's an frustration and guilt approach to the actual eating of the food. Instead of enjoying the textures and tastes of the food we consume there's worry about fat, cholesterol, too much (or too little)carbs, artificial additives, contaminations, oh my goodness the list goes on. Unless you have a medical reason as to why you must be overly concerned with the food you eat, no I'm not talking about losing five pounds to wear that skimpy red dress to the office party. I'm speaking of serious medical situations that could lead to adverse health conditions or even death. If this is not you then maybe this year you will allow yourself to enjoy the holiday season's sights, sounds, smells, and yes tastes like never before. If people treated eating like a divine gift there would be no starvation diets and overeating. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Regena English, the editor of The Leather Spinsters Newsletter for happily unmarried careerwomen, http://www.leatherspinsters.com .
