From: "David Neeley" Cinnamon as a healthful herb The study that was reported in the mass media was published in a journal called "Diabetes Care" in the December issue. It was by a group of researchers in Peshawar, Pakistan. The study subjects (30 men and 30 women) were given either 1, 3, or 6 grams of cinnamon in capsules each day for forty days. You should know that these subjects were Type II diabetics. At the end of the forty day trial, those taking the cinnamon when compared to the ones taking placebo reduced their average glucose readings and their lipids as well. To quote the abstract of the study:"After 40 days, all three levels of cinnamon reduced the mean fasting serum glucose (18–29%), triglyceride (23–30%), LDL cholesterol (7–27%), and total cholesterol (12–26%) levels; no significant changes were noted in the placebo groups. Changes in HDL cholesterol were not significant." Please note that this is quite a bit of cinnamon! Even one gram is quite a bit more than a "healthy sprinkle" of cinnamon! Unless you put it in capsules, you'll be fairly hard up to be able to eat that much cinnamon in a day...unless you happen to *like* it as much as I do! Various other strategies for improving lipid (fat) levels can help a great deal. After the holiday, I am accelerating my move to a vegan diet, for example. For most folks, that may be the ultimate diet for health purposes.
