Introducing Excelsior College
Check it out, this is where I attained my B.S.
- Uncle Bridge
In 1971 Regents College of the University of the State of New York was founded by the
State of New York to make college degrees more accessible to busy, working adults. We
focused on what our students knew, rather than where or how they learned it. It was a
radical concept in its day because it recognized that college-level knowledge could be
attained in many ways and students should receive credit for what they know.
As a world leader in distance education, we do not insist that learning can take place
only in the classroom. Instead, we know there are many avenues for earning college
credit. We give our students access to more avenues than most traditional colleges
and universities because we know it's not realistic to expect busy, active adults with
family and career commitments to drop out of life to earn a degree.
We start the journey upward by acknowledging the college credits you've already
earned, so there's no going backward.
Today, our name is Excelsior College, a name which means Ever Upward and more
accurately describes what we do — propel our students ever upward toward reaching
their lifetime goals. Become one of our students. Your dreams are within reach here.
Excelsior College lets you:
• Transfer an unlimited number of credits from other regionally accredited colleges
and universities to your Excelsior College Liberal Arts undergraduate degree.
• Design your own schedule, suiting work and study to your personal
circumstances.
• Use a variety of learning resources to acquire the additional knowledge and
competencies needed.
• Earn credits in your own space, at your own pace, not following the usual
academic calendar.
Here's How It Works:
1. Start with an evaluation of how many credits you bring into the program.
When you enroll at Excelsior College, the first thing we do is establish how many of the
college credits you've already earned apply to your degree program. Unlike traditional
colleges with residency requirements, we look at a wide variety of credit sources, so
you may earn credit for learning you have already achieved and may not have to repeat
courses in subjects in which you are already proficient.
Excelsior College evaluates learning for credit from courses successfully completed at
other regionally accredited colleges and universities, distance education courses,
for-credit college exams, and training completed on the job, in the military or other
settings.
2. Chart a path to degree completion.
Once enrolled, your Academic Advisor works with you to chart a path for completion of
your degree. Our Academic Advisors help you access thousands of sources of learning
from which to complete your degree. These include:
Credit by Examination
Excelsior College Examinations are used by many students to meet degree requirements.
Other sources of credit by examination are CLEP, DANTES and more!
Courses at other accredited colleges and universities
Because we have no residency requirement, Excelsior College accepts degree-relevant
credits earned at other accredited colleges and universities around the world.
Accredited distance education courses
Once enrolled in Excelsior College, your Academic Advisor will help you tap into
DistanceLearn®, our database of thousands of sources of earning credit at a distance
from regionally and ministerially accredited colleges and universities.
Training evaluated by the American Council on Education (ACE)
Apply credit toward your degree from ACE-approved training completed on the job, in the
military or other settings.
Not every means of learning is appropriate for every person. That's why our Academic
Advisors work with our students individually to assure them of the most effective and
efficient educational experience they can have.
3. Complete Your Degree!
Excelsior College offers 30 different degree programs at the associate and
